AWAMI NATIONAL PARTY


The Awami National Party was formed in 1986 by Abdul Wali Khan in 1986 and its current president is Asfandyar Wali Khan, grandson of Abdul Ghaffar Khan also known as Bacha Khan. Wali Khan’s political career however began with the National Awami Party in 1956, in 1965 the NAP split into two factions with its original leader Bhashani leading one and Wali Khan leading the other.

1970 the party members contested the elections under the PPP banner however the tenure was short lived. In the 2008 elections the party secured 13 National Assembly seats and held the fifth highest number of seats in the assembly.

MANIFESTO


The Awami National Party through its manifesto lays stress on improving law and order while also claiming it will increase the education budget to 6 percent of GDP. That it will increase the tax to GDP ratio to a minimum of 15 percent of GDP. That it will make efforts to overcome the energy shortage, promote healthcare, and that human rights are respected.



HISTORY


After its formation in 1986 with Wali Khan as its President and RasoolBuxPalejo as its Secretary General the ANP worked as a member of the Movement for Restoration of Democracy.

Since 1988 the ANP has been an important ally of the PPP as well as the MQM despite political differences between the two. After the 88 elections ANP formed a coalition government with the PPP in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (then NWFP) and with the MQM in SIndh. In 1990 the ANP switched sides and allied itself with the Pakistan Muslim League forming a coalition government.

After the military coup in 1999, the ANP was an active member of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy. In the 2008 elections the ANP was part of the coalition government in the centre while also part of the coalition provincial governments in Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
