JAMIAT ULEMA-E-ISLAM FAZLUR REHMAN GROUP

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazlur Rehman group was formed when the JUI split into two groups. The original JUI traces its roots back to the Jamiat Ulema Hind. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam was formed when in 1945 the JUH supported the Indian National Congress against the Muslim League’s demand for a separate state of Pakistan.

The JUI in Pakistan was activated by Fazlur Rehman’s father Mufti Mahmud in the 1960’s. In 1980 Fazlur eahman took over as the parties head. During the Zia era the JUI was part of the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy.

The JUI-F recruits its members from the madrassha’s which it has played a role in establishing. It is credited with the establishment of the largest number of madrassah’s compared to any other party. Its key support is found in the Kheyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces. It was part of the MMA that swept the 2002 elections and in 2008 it was part of the coalition government having secured a total of 7 general seats in the National Assembly.

MANIFESTO

The JUI-F in its slogan has promised stabilizing the Islamic system in the country in accordance with the constitution, which states that laws in the country must be formed in the light of teachings of the Holy Quran and Sunnah.

The JUI-F maintains that peace in South Asia is dependant on the resolution of the Kashmir dispute. It promises to bring the Kashmir dispute right to the top of the country’s foreign policy agenda. It maintains that after coming to power, the JUI-F government will establish friendly terms with all countries letting no one to exploit Pakistan's interests. The JUI-F will make Pakistan a welfare state.

It further promises 50 percent share of workers unions in the industries’ board of directors. That it will ban forced eviction of tenants from agricultural lands, will liberate the country’s natural resources from multinational companies and will tap them to produce cheaper energy to revive the industrial sector.

HISTORY

Finding its roots in the JamiatUlema-e-Hind the JUI was born in 1945 after the JUH supported the Indian Congress against the creation of Pakistan. Later the JUI split into factions with JUI-F being left by Fazlur Rehman the son of Mufti Mahmud who founded the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam in Pakistan. Inheriting the party from his father, Fazlur Rehman has contested general elections since 1988 from his hometown constituency of NA-18.

During the Benazir Bhutto years, Maulana Fazlur Rehman campaigned and lobbied for her (Benazir’s) right to become Prime Minister of Pakistan. This earned Rehman influence over Bhutto who he would later mentor on religious affairs and would travel with her as part of her foreign delegation.
